“On the third floor was an outdoor walkway that connected our building to the adjacent one. We leaned against the railing and looked out. Bare trees lined the sidewalk and cars drove by sparingly on the fourlane road in front. I love winter. The season that creates more space in the streets, more space on the trees. I felt lighter in the cold air and let out a big breath.”

“For four years I worked as a bookkeeper at a small company until I was let go at the beginning of the year. The CEO said I wasn’t a team player. He told me I should try going to lunch with my coworkers at my next job. What a load of crap. There was no reason for me to eat with my coworkers at my new job. Because a month ago, I had become an assassin.”

Just finished the first story and I’m scared that this collection is going to break my heart

“People were really fearful. Maybe the jellyfish weren’t there to be God, or zombies, or to hasten the end of the world. Maybe they were just glowing to the best of their abilities. People, not the jellyfish, were the problem. Everyone had a fear of darkness, so maybe those who couldn’t live with their own darkness were the ones drawn to the creatures’ glow.”
