Younger folk now, they have their own names, their own nightmares, but it’s always the same story: an innocent child crosses paths with evil and they’re never seen again.

It seeps into you, this fascination with the past. When you get old you suddenly feel you’ve got more in common with those who are long gone than with a lot of people still here. It makes sense ‘cos the dead are just the other side of a single missed breath. Whereas the young are a lifetime away.

‘cos he was so small. Far too small to hold the heart that he had.
And I loved him. If he was the hinge between what my life was and what it could’ve been, then so be it.

Anyone wants to stand a bit taller to see a bit more of the world, they’re liable to get their legs kicked from under them.

Share your life with anything for long enough and it becomes a part of you. Margie thought that went double for husbands and dogs. In her experience, both loved you well beyond the limits of reason, and when that love went away, it was a ship sinking, dragging everything else down.
