Status Updates From Great Dialogues: The Republ...

Nearly half way through Symposium and we haven't even gotten to Socrates' speech yet. So many bizarre and fascinating views on love!

Finished Menon! Conclusion was that virtue didn't come from nature, could not be taught or nurtured and so must come from the divine.

Baby steps. XD I actually understood the point Socrates was making and then he immediately follows it up with "But what if we're wrong?"

Socrates says that our souls are reincarnated, that we already know everything and learning is not learning but rather remembering what we already knew. Interesting idea.

"Then nobody desires bad things,... unless he wishes to be [miserable]. For what is the depth of misery other than to desire bad things and to get them?" I want cake for the momentary yummy satisfaction even though I know it's bad for me... I've discovered that reading this out loud as a dialog helps with understanding, though the reading is even slower. XD

Socrates talks in circles... Ended up skipping most of Ion but Menon is somewhat follow-able. I feel like I need the Cliff Notes version.

This has been on the currently reading shelf for ages, but I only just started reading it last night. XD
