Aaron slapped his hands on his knees and rose to check the food Kenny still hadn’t assembled. “No tomato.”
“What?” Kenny blinked.
“I don’t like tomato.” Aaron stood and made his way over to the breakfast bar opposite Kenny. “The other salad stuff’s fine. But not tomato. Seepy juices make me gag.”
“Not from my recollection.” Kenny slathered the butter over the slices of bread.
“Oooh. You went there!”

“What?” Kenny blinked.

Aaron turned and before Kenny could stop himself, he reached out and grabbed Aaron’s wrist. For a moment, they both froze. Aaron peered down to where Kenny circled his wrist with his fingers. He slowly rose to meet Kenny’s gaze. That look could stop traffic. Pierce hearts. Commit murder. He cocked his head, curious, almost challenging, waiting to see what Kenny would do next.
Kenny would like to know himself.

Aaron Jones was like a beaming light shining down a dark alley. An open fire on a mound of dereliction. Beautiful, striking, and could commit harm. Aaron was a spark that, if tested, would rage and flare and destroy everything. And their connection was a living, breathing thing, ready to spread and infect. Kenny hadn’t had a feeling like that since Jack.

Aaron stiffened. He knew the answer. Or at least his own version of it. But the way Dr. Lyons asked, as though demanding the truth from some shadowy abyss within each of them, sent a shiver up his spine.
“Is evil born? Or is it made? Is it the monster hiding under the bed? Or is it the person sitting next to you? What is evil?”
Aaron leaned back in his chair. You’re looking right at it, Doc.
