It's a 50/50 chance or liken it to the flip of a coin which direction Jim's life would go. As he saw it, it was not in his hands how his story would turn out. He had passed the power on to someone else to turn his ship's rudder one way or the other.

Definitely staying up to see what happens for Jim as it will either directly or indirectly change the lives of at least 9 other individuals.
