An elderly man had been watching me [...], no doubt for want of anything better to do; hands deep in his shabby coat pockets, he was muffled up to his frail chin and pink protruding ears in the folds of a thick woolen scarf. Above it his eyes seemed about to dissolve in their own liquid, to swim like pale oysters in wrinkled shells, concaves from which a salty trickle overflowed on to cheeks now almost transparent.

Her hands had already fluttered in mid-air like startled birds in a cornfield, but only for a moment. They were used to the sound of gunshots, and nestled back in her lap after the briefest nervous sortie to her throat, the drinking glass, the side of her head.

"I must, I thought, bring in a newspaper or, better still, a book, to appear to give me some sense of purpose, if I go on having to dine alone. Instinct, or some remnant of a previous existence, told me that being an unaccompanied woman in a public place is no joke: it has to be explained."

Maravillada con la prosa. Es increíble cómo atrapa sin que apenas suceda nada en la trama. Está todo en el trasfondo, en el personaje, en el paisaje.
