“One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds.” Aldo Leopold

Reading these birding chapters has me googling all these unfamiliar European birds. This farm/rewilding experiment would be really cool to visit if I ever make it back to England.

"Though we protest that we love nature it seems that this is only on our own terms. We have become a nation of gardeners, more interested in exotic flowers than natives."
Reminds me of people around here and their big feelings about goldenrod, often erroneously identified as ragweed. They haven't seen the clusters of bees and beetles and other insects on it.

I feel like Britain had this ecological disaster coming? Not the people of modern Britain, certainly this isn't the world that children deserve to inherit, but the empire machine of Britain that always thought there was another continent to exploit/rape/pillage is now reaping the devastation at home. You protected less than 1% of your nature on your island—that was terrible planning and choices have consequences.
