"visibility is one of those really pernicious notions because not only do most people misunderstand what visibility is about (or ought to be about) but because they most often see _hyper visilibility_ and, in their bitter envy, decide that _this_ is what their goal should be and something worth working towards."

"transmisogyny was a necessary part of colonialism exerting its hegemonic power over colonies. and this, of course, is also connected to the forced spread of christianity across the globe."

i like where the author is going so far but i’m a little worried they are not immensely fond of trans men 😭

I think eliminating trans as a qualifier when we talk about trans women and men is incredibly unhelpful. It is so obvious to me that trans women are women and trans men are men while also understanding that being transgender heavily informs the way you move through the world and are perceived, treated, etc. Attempting to ignore how trans men’s experience is different than cis men’s is unhelpful for no reason.

Their ideas about the “closet” are super helpful in breaking down and investigating the inclination to “come out” at all.
What I’m struggling with is the lack of context of Teich’s argument, which Binaonan is supposedly rebutting.
Also! Trans men catching strays left and right!

I think it’s telling that I was recommended this book exclusively by white people… Certainly reading this 10 years later, especially as a fellow chronically online trans person, there are a lot of ideas in here that I’m sure the author no longer agrees with (which they warn you about very early on).

seemingly minor thing but this book claims that marsha p. johnson “literally threw the first stone [at stonewall]” which is just not true. https://www.thepinknews.com/2020/05/2... this is a super common misconception, but one that is definitively false, and it frustrates me that this book is spreading misinformation.
