In order for the will to love God with all its strength, it must be purged of its unruly operations, affectations and desires.

Much of this is not new to anyone familiar with John's writing, but what is unique (for me) is how he lines John's views/beliefs on contemplation alongside those of William of St. Thierry, a Cistercian monk of the 13th century, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Walter Hilton, an Augustinian of the 14th century and others. Very helpful!
