I hadn't realized until now I've read another book by this author and it tracks. The tension of a gothic horror was going so well until the magic angle, something about it stopped the buildup cold

I feel like it’s slowing down and getting less interesting than it was at the beginning. The weird mix of post-WWI England and the Victorian era really bothers me; I’ve read other books where the author successfully combined different time periods, but here, it just doesn’t fit.
