Paul arrives at Cold Mountain in pain due to a worse urinary tract infection. Paul goes to see the Warden early to discuss staffing for William Wharton's arrival and his own need to see a doctor. Instead, the warden shares that his wife Melinda is dying from a terminal brain tumor. Paul forgets to ask to have Brutal transferred to E Block to help manage the incoming violent prisoner.

Percy continues to target and harass Delacroix on E Block. Paul pulls him aside and threatens Percy telling him that fellow guard Brutal dislikes him and might handle his cruel behavior with physical violence. This calms Percy down shockingly.

Eduard Delacroix bonds with the intelligent mouse, Mr. Jingles, and the guards help him accommodate his new pet.

Paul remembers the arrival of inmate Eduard Delacroix, whom guard Percy Wetmore brutally beats under the false claim that the prisoner tried to grope him. Brutal tells Paul it was accidental contact. He chooses not to write a report because of Percy’s connections.

Arlen Bitterbuck’s execution happens. Percy is being rude and everything. Brutal has to reprimand him from what he’s doing.

Paul references a letter he wrote back to his now wife back then and how he poured his love into it. He compares the feeling of writing about John Coffey as the same feeling. Paul realizes Mr jingles was searching for Delacroix. He sees how miserable John is compared to others.

Paul and the guards rehearse the upcoming execution of Arlen Bitterbuck.

The mouse shows up again specifically when Percy is off. The inmates on death row notice that the mouse seems to know when Percy is gone. Paul secretly agrees with this observation. Harry shows Toot-Toot how the mouse responds to treats, bringing a brief moment of lighthearted wonder to the block. Paul thinks the mouse has powers.

The mouse comes back days later. All the guards are amused by it except Percy of course. Some of the guards try to feed the mouse and play along with it. Percy hates it and wants to kill it. He goes as far as throwing his baton violently at it.

Paul lives in the green pines nursing home and compares it to cold mountain death row. There is a guy named Brad there that is like Percy. He calls him Paulie despite him telling Brad to stop. Brad makes jokes about Alzheimer’s. Paul passes time writing about when John first arrived in 1932.
