I have often read in Calvin's commentaries that reward is also by grace alone, and that its frequent appearance in Scripture is a means of perseverance for the elect; yet, Luther's explanation here is very precise and well-organized. He distinguishes between merit of worthiness and merit of consequence, noting that the nature of reward falls under the category of the latter.

"No; doctrinal truth should be preached always, openly, and without compromise, and never dissembled or concealed. There is no offense in it; it is the staff of uprightness."
