I was really surprised to learn how recent of a term empathy was. One of the key takeaways from the chapter is Sympathy is to suffer with someone verses empathy which is to suffer in someone (or to put it in another way to suffer as someone). Fav quote this chapter “Sympathy willingly joins with sufferers in their pain. Empathy makes their suffering our own in a more universal and totalizing way.”

Untruthful pity. Untethered empathy. These are the counterfeits of compassion.

Finally decided to read this and see what the fuss is all about. I’ve watched his video with Doug Wilson about Sin of Empathy and have heard him talk about it multiple times in class when I had him in college. I have always found his thoughts on it very helpful and biblical. Im excited to dig more into what he means by it though.
