It helps because it warns us not to be naive about life on earth. Life will often not be fair. It will often be cruel and painful. It is wiser - it makes more sense - to prepare for this reality rather than to deny it. The first step to coping with suffering is to prepare for it. Jesus says, "Take up your cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23)
