This book is all about managing exceptions with your parents. Dont fantasize that one day you’ll be so successful, so good that they’ll suddenly change or grow empathy. That is not an attainable goal or attitude, bc simply put: people who never want to change themselves will never change for you first.

Observing a parents bad behavior and not letting them get to you visibly bothers them so much that they actually end up revealing their true selves when they have no fire to feed off of. Kinda reminds me of gray rocking a narcissist. Their actions are always about them, and almost always less about u than you think. Getting out of role mindset from childhood and treating then as a mature, detached adult

I love the authors take on how to manage infractions with tnese parents. If you’re enjoying yourself, then don’t overanalyze and enjoy the moment. Go into each interaction with a desired outcome. Like “I want a cordial convo no drama eat, leave” and keep your goal on that. If they try and bait you, or emotionally dump, end the convo for another day. When they invoke an emotional response, take a step back
