Sand and Perr have been healed in many ways. A friendship has been forged. Perr has a new lease on life, a caring stepsister, Sands family, and a new life with her new best friend, Sand. A surprise ending for the stepmother and the future of the castle.

Great sorrow and anger overcome Perriott when she learns that a young Giles, the smithy's son and her friend, had betrayed her, at the order of the stepmother, and her beloved father, the king, has died. At the same time the thorny covering is receding as the two mend and repair. Will they finally be able to escape? Do they want to?

As the two mend, repair, and survive by subsisting on turnips that were in the cold keep, and other food stuffs they collected throughout the castle, they develop a tentative relationship. Connection has been finally made outside the castle when one of Perriott's guards recognizes her and tells her what has happened in the last 25 years. She has a half-sister who is now a ruler. The stepmother is still alive.

Sand mends a stuffed falcon. It comes to life! He resituates a young girl back into her crypt. Perriott is a princess. She comes back to life! Everything that the young smithy mends is miraculously made whole and usable. Together they try to figure out what happened in this castle over 25 years ago.

Sand wants to be a smithy. His father, Gilles, wants him to go to University. His stepmother is kind and thoughtful. Two miracles happen as Sand strives to keep alive in the barren, cold castle, which is surrounded by a murderous thorny vine that is deadly and consumes anything it can latch its venomous thorns onto. Nothing grows in the gardens, but signs of previous life are everywhere.

Wow! A young man wakes up in a large hearth in a destroyed castle. Fairy tale, extraordinaire. Everywhere he looks things are torn, broken, slashed, destroyed-even things that are seemingly unbreakable. Then he sees that even the castle is sundered. What could have done this much damage? his is just the beginning of an amazing tale of life and resurrection, damaged and repaired.

How did he get in there?

“I’m sorry,” Sand said, his voice roughened by he knew not what emotion.

“It’s not your fault. You didn’t do anything,” Perrotte said, wiping away the last of her tears.

“I meant, I feel sorrow for you.”
