Adam is horrible so far

Tork: I do not like Adam. I do not like him. He’s given me a book. It’s just a book, a precious book. I do like him. I have read it before, of course, but that does not matter.

He wrote ‘To Tork, to improve your vocabulary. I found it in the food bank.'

This takes my breath away with its superior tone, but what really makes me laugh is the bookshop receipt that falls out the back. He bought the book.

There's a ½ world between sleep & consciousness where creatures that are otherwise undetected slip through. Crafty creatures who tease with memories & yearnings from years ago. I resent her for doing this to me but at the same time I try to take comfort in mother’s voice wavering at me through the years & trials since I’ve seen her.

Suddenly another memory bangs on my mind, of him, & I have to catch my breath.

My home is just a small, mean space, down at the bottom of the block of flats under the stairs. In the corner there is a dark nasty triangle, where I can hide.

There is a smell of urine. The air tastes acrid & stale. It isn’t quite the bowels of the earth, but the lingering sense of desertion and failure make me feel weak and ill.

But why would they even write about someone as despicable as Adam? And why would Tork be attracted to him? Everything that comes out of Adam's mouth is literally a pile of shit.

Only 6% in and my heart just broke. How can one sentence do that?
