May’s part of the story which is mostly just historical fiction about living in communist China. It was well written I think but maybe a bit too on the nose political for me. The relationships were interesting at least.
I think the book is good though in the way it does the separate stories at different times. Keeps it from becoming monotonous. But yeah this section felt emotionally distant—more tell than feel.

every choice nick makes pisses me off and makes me cringe simultaneously PLEASE stop pushing away your mom who actually cares abt you and idealizing your dad who you’ve never had a relationship w over top of her !! listen to her perspective stop shutting her out omg also OF COURSE if you get w a girl while she has a bf she’ll do the same to you later on why would that be a shock to you

every decision nick is making is making me cringe
very readable / binge able as i’ve said but the characters lack depth ! even the main ones like i don’t understand any of them or how they’ve changed in the time gaps
social commentary is interesting to an extent like how matthew’s money is influencing relationships
