Lilias Trotter has come to mean so much to me since I first started learning about her, and so I’ve been highly anticipating this book (though somehow only heard about it right before its release)! That the author describes her intention of it as “…a drawing near to someone in a friendship across time,” makes my heart happy.

Biographies used to be mostly hero worship, painting men and women as nearly flawless, sinless creatures.
Then about 10 years ago it seemed to shift to “tell-all” tabloid-type works exposing the underlying weaknesses and conflicts of beloved heroes.
Now, it seems that many biographies have become more social commentaries, with bits of the subjects life and lots of analysis and worldview. This is that sort.

That last chapter had me tearing up a bit (and gave me more people/organizations to look up).
