Chapter 7 is so frustrating, oh my god. The absolute cascade of Jessie becoming a weeping girl all of a sudden, instant romance, and Hester's bullshit all in one fell swoop. I know this is intended to be upsetting, but I am going to throw this book across the room (except for the fact that it's lovingly borrowed from a friend and the spine seems frail as hell)

So well written that it’s surprising it was published in 1998 it feels so true to its 1910 setting
