He pictured his own varied deaths and realized that the end doesn’t matter. Just how you get there.

“I don’t need objects to keep the memory,” he whispered to himself. “The memory is already in me.”

The car crested a hill, and Chuck glanced in the side mirror. Behind them, the old barn stood silhouetted in golden light, solid and whole. Just as it should be.

He was doing so well.. what does he still have to learn?

“You don’t carry your healing. You live in it.”

One empty shelf in a house still largely full. One clear breath in a life still struggling for air. But it was something. It was a start

He found a candle and lit it on the kitchen counter. The flame flickered in the still room. Outside, night had fallen completely. Nothing in the house had fundamentally changed. The clutter remained. The paths were still narrow. The surfaces still disappeared beneath layers of stuff.

“What are you afraid will happen if you throw something away, Chuck?”

The question struck him hard. It was a question he had always avoided. He didn’t know what might be hiding behind that question.

Chuck stared at her, his mind racing through possible answers, none of which he wanted to say aloud. That he might forget who he was.

Hoarding isn’t simply messiness or disorganization. It’s a complex condition rooted in anxiety, trauma, and specific thought patterns.”

The stripping away of possessions hadn’t left emptiness, as he’d always feared. Instead, there was space. Space to breathe, to think, to focus on what mattered.

The storm broke, rain lashing against the window in sheets. Chuck remained where he was, letting the sound drown out his thoughts. He was tired of fighting the same battles, of making the same mistakes, of dying only to wake up and do it all again.

Outside his window, the stars wheeled in their ancient patterns, indifferent to the small dramas of human lives. Chuck stared at them for a long time, wondering if there was any escape from the cycles that bound him.

All his progress, all his insights, all his talk about finding belonging and purpose, had it meant nothing? Was he doomed to repeat this cycle endlessly, life after life?

That evening, Chuck sat alone in the dairy barn, surrounded by his possessions. The thought of selling any of them made his chest tight with anxiety. Each item, no matter how seemingly worthless to others, had significance to him. The wooden crates weren’t just containers; they were artifacts of local history. The rusted tools weren’t junk; they were a testament to the craftsmanship of another era.

That night, Chuck lay awake, staring at the shapes of his collections in the moonlight. He knew Robert was right. The urge to accumulate, to gather, to keep—it was already growing stronger. The same pattern as before, starting all over again.

He had died and somehow awakened in his past. Middle Falls felt solid around him—the sound of cars passing on the road, the sensation of spring sunshine on his face. He had no idea how, but the evidence was hard to argue with. To all appearances, he had been given a second chance.

He sat down heavily on the desk chair, newspaper trembling in his hands. This couldn’t be a dream or hallucination. The details were too specific, things that had long since disappeared from his memory, like the color of the carpet and the ugly golden couch, were recreated perfectly.

Chuck tried to organize his chaotic thoughts. He remembered dying beneath his collection in 2025.

The absence of filth wasn’t enough to make wherever he was heaven, and the surrounding details were too specific, too mundane for any afterlife. The clock radio on the nightstand displayed 8:14 in red digital numbers. A three-bladed electric fan hummed softly in the corner. He could hear the sound of a car starting outside his window and then two people having a conversation.

His final thought before consciousness slipped away wasn’t of regret or fear, but simple confusion. What was the point of saving everything if you lost yourself in the process?

In the crushing darkness, time lost meaning. Minutes or hours passed as Chuck’s mind drifted between consciousness and something darker. His thoughts turned to the irony of his situation—death by the very things he believed would give his life value.

And still, that mess, that unacceptable, incredible mass of stuff comforted him. Even if he couldn’t see it, he knew it was there. It was his.

His kitchen existed only in theory now.The refrigerator door couldn’t open more than an inch before hitting a wall of cardboard boxes containing Star Wars merchandise. The sink overflowed with unwashed dishes from years ago.Those dishes now served as a platform for plastic grocery bags tied at the top, containing his solid waste.

Each of his collections had begun with a single, significant find that sparked joy. If he had limited himself in any way, that might have made for a fun, if somewhat eclectic, series of collections. Whatever caused a normal person to say enough was missing in Chuck, though. The very concept of having enough of any of his collections was foreign to him.
