Winfield didn’t find it as hard as he had expected, descending the side of the building. He hadn’t done it for years, but it was like riding a bike, except it was nothing like riding a bike, and it was unlikely he’d die from messing up riding a bike.

Winfield watched as Lee rummaged through his computer bag some more until he found a headset at the bottom of it. Lee slipped the headset on and went to work, clicking away on the keyboard. Pulling up pages Winfield had never seen before.
“All of this is just to contact the guy?” Winfield asked, trying to decide if he should be impressed, or if this was all just overkill.

Lee looked down at the paper.
One word was scribbled in the center of the page. ‘Deadlock.’ “What does this mean?” he asked, frowning as he glanced up at the man.

“Simon, get out of the car,” he whispered to Lee, as he tried to figure out his own escape plan. But right then getting his son out of there was more important. “Get out, now!”
Lee knew the second he called him ‘Simon’ that something was wrong and when he saw his face, he knew he needed to get out of the car as fast as he possibly could.

As he came at him, Winfield grabbed the man’s arm then using the man’s own momentum, he took him to the ground. Knocking the air out of the man’s lungs and stunning him. Still gripping the man’s arm, Winfield placed his boot on the man’s shoulder. There was a gross ‘pop’ as he dislocated the man’s shoulder.

“You’re not going anywhere!” the guard hissed. “Where’s your partner that strangle me out? You’re obviously not strong enough to have done it.”
Ouch! Now that was just rude.
Lee thought about saying something about it, but decided he’d rather escape than scold the guard over his manners. “Revoir,” Lee called to the man.

“Who are you?” the guard asked Winfield as he drew near to the door. “No one’s suppose to be in here.”
“Then what are you doing down here?” Winfield asked, crossing his arms as his eyes narrowed. “This is off limits to all low ranking personnel.”
“I… I was doing my route, sir,” the guard said, looking confused. “Who are you?”
“Really? You don’t know who I am?” Winfield scoffed. “I have a had time believe that!"

Is it bad that I've already finished the epilogue? :P

“He’s the Secretary of Defense, and the OS is in the gray area where no one’s quite sure who’s in charge,” Lee said. “But either way, he’s done it.”
“Man! I wonder what they’re going to do with all those unemployed agents?”
“I don’t know, but right now we have other things to worry about,” Lee said. “We need to get going, or we won’t have time to do everything we need to."

“Hopefully I’ll never have to find out if that true,” Lee said, laughing. “I have no plans to ever feeding a small village. What day is it anyways?” he asked, grabbing for a box of cereal. “Was it just yesterday I called you?”
“Yeah, and the day before that was Christmas.”
“Wow! Merry Christmas then,” Lee mumbled. "How does time keep going by so quickly? I mean, wasn’t it just Thanksgiving a few days ago?”

Lee rolled his eyes. “Just drop it and drive, we don’t really have time to waste arguing about this. I’ve already told you, I worked for the government in the Program, I really shouldn’t have even told you that much.”
Winfield started the car. “You mean because what they did was illegal, using a kid?” Shaking his head, he pulled out of the parking garage and headed to New York.

“Where did you hear the name… Deadlock?” he asked.
“From one of their agents,” Lee said. “Why?”
“Oh, well, I’ve… I’ve just dealt with them before,” he said. “They don’t play around.”
Lee eyed his father. Playing with the collar of his shirt. Protective body language, with his arms crossed and his shoulders hunched.
Yeah… There was definitely something more to it than that.

“Where did you hear the name… Deadlock?” he asked.

“Oh, well, I’ve… I’ve just dealt with them before,” he said. “They don’t play around.”

Winfield sighed. “It’s sure been an interesting holiday weekend, hasn’t it?” He glanced over at his son, when he didn’t get a response.
Lee was already sound asleep. Man! That was quick, but then again he hadn’t really slept since he’d left the house a few days before.
Winfield chuckled and laid his jacket over Lee, before starting the car and pulling away from the hospital. “Sleep tight, Kiddo.”

“Don’t lecture me on how to handle this,” Lee said, gritting his teeth. “I’ve dealt with his kind before. I know what I’m doing.”
“And what? You think I haven’t?” Winfield asked. “If you start stooping to their level, how will you know when you’ve gone too far and have become no better than them?

Winfield’s skin was oddly cool, as he pulled the oxygen mask over Lee’s face. “Just breath, alright?” he said, holding the mask against Lee’s mouth. “It’s going to be okay. You’ve just got to breath.”
But Lee couldn’t do just that. He grabbed for the mask and pulled it off. “Davis?” he mumbled.
“The ‘other’ EMTs are taking care of him, right now,” Winfield said, shoving the mask back against his face.
“Good."

Lee moved towards the window and stared out it. “It was easier before I became a Christian.”
Davis laughed. “Yeah, people tend to get that part wrong. They think it will be easier after they become a Christian, but the opposite it true, because God expects more from us than a nonChristian.”

Roughly, they shoved him down the driveway and towards their waiting car.
“Oh, man! A black SUV? Really guys?” Lee asked as they pulled him towards it. “Couldn’t you be a little more original?”
“Someone thinks he’s funny,” one of the man growled, yanking the door open for them to shove him through. “Let’s see how funny you think you are, when we get what we want from you.” With that, he slammed the door in Lee’s face

Lee stopped and stared at him. “You rented a new car? Are you just asking for us to be in a car chase where we end up totaling this thing?”
“First off, it’s not brand new, just old enough it shouldn’t have any problems,” Winfield said. “Second, you watch way too many spy movies. You know that, right? Just because it’s a newer car, doesn’t mean we’re going to be in a car chase.”
