sometimes i forgot the story we’re reading right now is not the ‘actual thing’ that happened at the house. this is a book written by one of the people that went there and somehow survived - thus unreliable narrative from the beginning. im assuming it is written by one of the authors and following one of Miyagaki’s rules, they also have to be the victim in their own story.
