This novel is not only a historical account of defying customs in the name of love, it’s a reminder to me of the fact my own maternal grandmother did just this, and if she hadn’t, I would not be here. Many people of past have chosen love over custom, and it had in fact disrupted the status of that family, that name, and ultimately human experience. When will love be greater than power, in anything?

My maternal grandmothers maternal aunt was married to my maternal grandmothers paternal grandfather, the two of them were very much in love, their daughter who was my grandmothers cousin was more like a sister to my grandmother, and they all lived together in the same house in England in the early 20th century where they operated a medical clinic on the main floor, the men were doctors and the women their support.
