Joukovsky appears to be re-setting the table on her dyad-swapping relationship square structure that she used in A Portrait of a Mirror, but maybe that's a fake out. The character ages are advanced in the future, though they're also nakedly semi-autobiographical too. Class-status dynamics also are make explicit in the text (similar to how the topic is handle in the film The Materialists).
