I read much of the content here in a modified form in the chapter on Gogol in Nabokov’s Russian lectures. It has a few points of interest: An elucidating letter and Nabokov’s commentary (14-21), Comments on the “Government Specter” (54-60), and the elucidation of poshlust (63-74)

Medio, medio, Mr. Rochester cae en poshlust, si lo asemejamos con Chichikov, ¿eh?

Cada vez puedo figurar más el porqué Nabokov escribió un libro como Lolita

primero sabía que Nikolai Gó(ghoul) era un escritor, luego, conversando con alguien, y hablando específicamente de Nabokov, me entero que es un libro. SHOCK. Estuve un año entero creyendo que Nikolai era ficticio, vuelvo a leer este libro, y me doy cuenta, sí, efectivamente, era un escritor 🙂🙂

At this point Nabokov, with characteristic irreverence, relates to the reader Gogol’s embarrassing episode of public seasickness and extreme vomiting.

Absolutely hilarious. I can imagine how mortified Gogol would be to see this published.
