It appears as if the island is facing two choices right now: stability or chaos. Stability offers, predictability, security, and structure. Chaos, on the other hand, embodies uncertainty and unknown possibilities. Greenland will need to take risks, as will Puerto Rico.

In 2023, Greenland published a draft constitution it had been working on since 2016. The ensuing pages talk about all the reasons the constitution still hasn’t gone into force. The discussion reminds me of the debate on PR statehood.

Tense times during WWII as Roosevelt concluded an agreement with the Danish Ambassador in DC to “protect” Greenland. The U. S. feared Nazi occupation of the island, given Denmark’s occupation by Hitler. The world’s sole operating cryolite mine was in Greenland; it’s a vital component in making aluminum, used for planes during the war.
