within the limitations of metaphysics, Aristotle had established the proto-phenomenological fact that the analogical unity of all modes of being is disclosedness-to-understanding. Only on this basis was Heidegger able to step beyond Husserl’s extraordinary discovery of the categorial intuition into his own question about what makes such categorial intuitions possible.

H interprets A’s Metaphysics IX: The key to Heidegger’s own phenomenology and specifically to how he understands Sein in Being and Time lies in his embrace of Aristotle’s dictum that any given thing “has as much disclosedness [ἀλήϑεια] about it as it has being [εἶναι].”

... the only entrance into Heidegger’s work is through the phenomenological reduction. Over the door of his Academy is engraved ἀϕαινομενολέγητος μηδεὶς εἰσίτω, which translates roughly as follows: “No phenomenological reduction? Don’t even try to get in.”

🙈 So much for years of math lessons ... got through Plato’s door, turned away at Heidegger’s!

... Therefore, the always-already-operative thrown-open clearing is the “thing itself” of all Heidegger’s work.
Given this chain of argument (which is Heidegger’s)

I ... think you’re forcing this one.

Instead of the merely formally indicative term “das Sein selbst” (which is only Heidegger’s lorem ipsum for the goal of his thought), we should speak of “thrown-openness” or “the thrown-open clearing”

H’s lorem ... ipsum!? 🤣

Sheehan, you’re killing me. Please don’t grow any older, I want to read at least 50 more books by you (and all the rascal essays I can find.)

More on Sheehan’s “disclaimer”: “I read his work strictly as what [Heidegger] himself declared it to be—namely, phenomenology, which means that it is about one thing only: sense or meaning (I take them as the same), both in itself and in terms of its source.”

Important disclaimer about Sheehan’s interpretive angle: his work, both early and late, was not about “being” as Western philosophy has understood that term for over twenty-five hundred years, but rather about sense itself: meaningfulness and its source.

This is metal AF

By our very nature we are both the demand for and the reason for intelligibility, for a meaningfulness that determines us and yet has no reality apart from us. And there is no way out but death. In fact, the whole process of making sense is mortal.

Heidegger, in the tradition of Augustine’s distentio est vita mea, calls this kinetic stretched-out-ness of ex-sistence by the potentially misleading term “temporality.” ... a stretched-open expanse, which is finite insofar as it is open and thus bound up with unrealized possibilities.

No part of this is “potentially” misleading, this is actually misleading!
