Set in 1920s Ireland, sixteen year old Kitty Doyle is sent to work as a maid at Harwood Hall after her father remarries. Both herself and her sisters are all 'farmed out' as is the tradition on a new marriage. She vows to save her wages to buy a place where she and her sisters can be a family again.
