“Beyond the Phoenix”
Like “Thunder in the Dawn,” we get a very strange journey through unfathomable lands. There, gods battle each other and Elak is turned into an instrument of the phoenix god, Assurah.

“Spawn of Dagon”
The Lovecraft Cthulhu Mythos story. Short, but with lots of good weirdness. You get both a wizard’s tower and demons from the ocean. Lycon continues with his drunken debauchery and Elak has his own weakness with the ladies.

“Thunder in the Dawn”
Very inventive! I didn’t realize that Kuttner originated the S&S duo a year before Leiber’s first story was published! Some of the scenes in this story reminded me of C. L. Moore eerie weirdness, notably the pool of the Pikhts’ and Elf’s castle.
