Status Updates From Loser of the Year

“May she have hemorrhoids that weep more often than an unhappy toddler.”

“It wasn’t enough. It was a mouthful in famine.”

“Then she could head downstairs, maybe spear a hot latke in the frying pan while her mother, secretly thrilled to bits, chided Mattie for taking what would soon be hers anyway.”

“She liked seeing Mattie. Or she liked that Mattie wanted Jillian to see her. Which wasn’t the same thing, but maybe close to it.”

I’ve been thinking about this lately, not in the context of a potential lover, but in the context of friends. I have a friend who shows/tells me everything about herself without prompting and one hardly tells me anything without my asking. So different.

“You forgot what we did in that room. You forgot me.” Jillian’s voice cracked. “I’m still in there. I never left.”
