We humans are prone to being hoodwinked by these illusions, our imaginations running wild. If stimulated enough, appearances can create wild delusions, making us believe that something as simple as an “I’m sorry for your loss “ means people actually care.

Appearances, they’re all around us, dancing on the edge of perception, luring us into traps of our own making. They can lead us to believe our spouses are still smitten, or that our neighbors, ever-smiling, are the epitome of serenity. They keep our true selves shrouded in shadow, never allowing the world a glimpse of our inner darkness.

The way the author shifts between the characters’ perspectives while keeping a unifying voice (like one main character telling the story) is so refreshing. It totally gives me Desperate Housewives vibes, but like... in a more layered, complex drama story. It’s packed with details, but somehow keeps a great pace that's intriguing to follow.
