War, and specifically WWI, was brutal. Survive or not, the soldiers, nurses and Doctors were scarred. Physical wounds aside, the mental pain was greater. The book brings full circle the wrestling of one’s mind, memories, how to deal with it all (a deal with the devil?). Excellent read.

Compassion and relationships mixed with a need for hope is what is happening in this well written WWI reality check. The magical realism is not a distraction and fits well with the story.

Faland is following and “helping” injured, bewildered, searching soldiers in the deepest, darkest, hellhole of a war (WWI, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium). Is Faland offering them a temporary escape from all the ugliness around them with wine and music or is he taking something from them for his own use???
