The story is good so far, but I'm increasingly upset that it seems the Volumes 1-4 thing with this "series" is just a gimmick for splitting up a single book into 4 parts so you can give away the first part and try to hook readers into the rest of the book.

Now that was a refreshing change of pace for the story.

Still pretty simple. Something's bugging me about the descriptions of character actions, though. It was way too simple to pick up on Kanias knowing about Raine and Rennick's relevance to the realms.

Pretty typical fantasy opening. Can already tell Rennick manifested his powers, which means the purification is going to go badly for him. It's also awfully convenient that Seraph show up at the river.
