“Anger reveals the paradox of pride. It feels like power. People notice you for a moment, and you might get your way. No wonder it is so popular. It is the perfect drug for powerless people. It is also slavery to your desires. You don’t have control.”

Confession before God leads to thanks for his free, generous forgiveness, and to rest in what Christ has done. This starts a whole new cycle.

Anger is the emblem of arrogant pride. Its motto is “I want!” Anger is unfamiliar with “your [God’s] will be done” (Matthew 6:10). It can only be countered by those who are willing to “mourn and weep” and “humble yourselves before the Lord” (James 4:9–10). These are ways that the Lord says, “Come and die.” This is the way to true strength—God’s strength.

“Gentleness is strength within wise limits. It prefers careful reflection in the face of provocative acts, rather than reacting on first impulse.”

“Humility is not the path of always getting lower. Instead, it lives dependent on the God of life. Once we get the knack of it, it is natural and good.”

Paul invites you to burn your résumé now rather than watch it combust on the day you die (1 Peter 1:7). It turns out that by following Jesus you cast off sins, regrets, shame, and your good works.

God is great and over all the details of life, and humility makes more sense when you know that. God is good and loves you right now. Such love, freely given and clearly unearned, is certainly humbling.

“When you are actively confessing your sins before the Lord, you will immediately be less reactive, thin-skinned, and angry when criticized.”

“Here is what I hope to do today, but you are God. I want to rest in you and your will when I face the inevitable disappointments, frustrations, and inconveniences. I believe your ways are good.”

“In other words, if you don’t need Jesus, you don’t have Jesus. Humility is at the heart of faith and trust, and these are at the center of our response to Christ. “By grace you have been saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8).”

“Neither anxiety nor shame is prideful in itself. They can both be sheer misery. But pride is apparent when your anxiety and shame can’t hear God’s words.”

“The secret within humility is that our lives no longer teeter on our fragile egos but rest on something much firmer—Christ himself.”
