There are always plenty of people (mostly women) who don't wear team colors at games, they dress up instead. There were always at least a few I could see from our seats. She wouldn't stick out *that* much in black.

The anthem(s) are played between when the players warm up and they line up for the puck drop--he wouldn't be able to be gesturing to her by the boards and have teammates calling for him to come line up; he'd already be lined up with them on the ice for the anthem. (Don't want to assume her fictional team *also* always plays the Canadian anthem, but it should)
