Really enjoying the story except for some aspects of her naïveté.

Well, this place sounds like a shithole. The toilet thing took me out.

"Taipei Story is a novel about getting things wrong: almost every encounter in the pages to follow features mistranslation, miscommunication, and misunderstanding." ~ From Author’s Note
I’m not sure if this was added before or after what happened, but I’ll be able to share my thoughts more clearly once I finish it.

Came to write an update that this book is making my heart explode, and found out that people are cancelling preorders over the word "Israeli"?

The main character is so bland if I’m being honest. She doesn’t use any agency and just lets the plot happen to her even when she hates what’s happening and it’s to her own detriment. She’s basically a doormat and lets people walk all over her, and I don’t like that. Even if it’s an honest portrayal of the type of character Kuang was going for, I still don’t want to read about her.

still the paragraph structures are the same. she goes into very in-depth explanations of scenery or history that has an overall disconnected tone, and the last sentence always serves as an emotional wrap-up for lily that, if you aren’t expecting more from a novelist of over five books, could be considered heavy-hitting but really are just lackluster. lily hasn’t proved at all that she’s introspective

I never thought i'd be the kind of person who noticed sentence structure/grammatical phrasing but so many of her paragraphs have the same syntax and cadence that lily feels stifled from actually expressing genuine complex thoughts
