Oh, I just figured out what I liked about this book(!) The world building is subtle yet rich, which reminds me of how Charles de Lint creates his worlds. I LOVE THAT. This one is honestly a 'sleeper hit' for me in that I thought it sounded okay but not great, but I am LOVING IT.
