"He had a grizzled beard & glittering dark eyes. He wore a small black cap on his head & big black boots on his feet. Between the cap & boots, he wore nothing at all, other than white underpants & a very large, police style revolver suspended at his hip with a web belt & holster.

"a Lebanese pop singer killed 40 elephants for fun, he probably would have killed more except that a herd of elephants trampled him to death one day. American missionaries could be seen hunting elephants & other big game in the Wara Wara hills, the Loma mountains & elsewhere...missionaries supplied raw ivory to a carver who specialised in creating beautiful figurines of Jesus & the Virgin Mary"

"we heard shooting to the left: more poachers. Then we heard shooting from another direction, & later, as we moved into a different area of the park, we saw the rising plume of smoke from a poacher's fire, probably smoking meat. This "national park" had no tourists & no rangers. It was filled with hunters cleaning up."

this is interesting enough but irritating me incredibly at the same time. It is a hyper relaxed nature documentary. Inwardly I seethe. 'Where are you going, what's this all about, what's your argument, gggrhhrr'. Perhaps not the best thing to read after Baxandall's very clearly structured and developed discussion.
