Selected bibliography looks decently thorough

Really interesting to see the list of early settlers in Harlan County.

There is too much of the "remember this…" Or "keep an eye on this guy…"

The book is almost too conversational and it's kind of distracting. And I'm still not a fan of the made up conversations.

It's kind of annoying when the author keeps answering her own questions with yes or no. And sometimes exclamation points

Very conversational tone, feels/sounds like old-timers sitting around telling stories of bygone days.

I made it 35 years without hearing about the Sand creek massacre. I wish I still didn't know about it

I really don't like when authors re-create conversations between people who died decades and decades ago so they can't confirm or deny that that's how the conversation actually went. Just like I am not a fan of "reenactments" in documentaries, I can't suffer it in nonfiction texts either.

I've been to the Mayhew cabin, with my students. Really cool experience to see firsthand, the only official stop on the underground railroad and Nebraska.

I get that it's part of the subtitle but the constant phrase "dirty deed" is super annoying

History that reads like a narrative:)
