One reviewer has said that they cried a lot while reading this book but they couldn't tell you what it was about. One chapter in, I can see it.

I love a challenging book, so in that way this beast doesn’t disappoint. But the sentences - so long! The pages - so meandering! The endlessness of the minutiae - so daunting! Will I make it to page 708?! I haven’t decided if I want to…

I have put this back on the shelf unfinished. It is amazing but just too challenging.

The Hungarian Uprising of 1956. Now we are getting somewhere. Way too late.

A book of this size needs to have more to say than just showy writing, an occasional insight (no matter how well done), and a whole lot of fluff and shenanigans. This is a tedious slog.

This has gone from promising to dull. A book of memories, indeed, it's like going through someone's high school photo album. People I don't know and don't care about, listening to stories of silly escapades. Yes, there are some significant shifts, but not enough, and the sexual hijinks are tiresome.

This novel feels really long right now.

Whew, I'm on Part II. This is a bit more challenging than I thought after being away from this kind of novel for many years.

Thank you for sparing the reader from an incest scene. Ugh.
