I realized that there's text on the cover that reads "new abridged edition". At first I was seething, malding, etc. But after looking at the page counts of various editions, it seems that basically every version aside from the original uses the abridged text. Now I'm just confused.

Been wanting to read this for a while, but it's out of print (and no digital version available), so I had to track down a used copy.
