یونان به شرق فلسفه داد، و شرق به یونان مذهب. مذهب در این میان فاتح شد، زیرا فلسفه تجملی بود برای عده ای معدود، در حالی که مذهب تسلای خاطر عده ای فراوان بود. مذهب به قدرت بازگشت، زیرا به درماندگی و تنهایی نهانی بشر پی برد و به او الهام و شعر بخشید; و دنیاي سرخورده، استثمار شده، و خسته از جنگ با خوشحالی آن را پذیرفت تا امید از دست رفته را بازیابد. نامنتظرترین و عمیق ترین اثر فتح اسکندر، شرق گرایی روح اروپا بود.

پس از اسکندر، خواص فرهنگ یونانی در روح شرقی نفوذ نکرد؛ تازه طلبی، اشتیاق به مادیت، تمایل به کمال، و استقلال فردی یونانی تغییري در خواص شرقی ها ایجاد ننمود. برعکس، با گذشت زمان، نحوه اندیشه و احساس شرقی به قشر یونانیان حاکم نفوذ کرد، و به توسط آنها به مغرب رفت و دنیاي کفار را تغییر شکل داد. سلطنت استبدادی شرقی نشان داد که از دموکراسی یونانی نیرومندتر است و بالاخره شکل خود را
به دنیاي مغرب زمین نیز تحمیل کرد.

اصلِ اساسیِ دموکراسی، آزادی است که ممکن است به هرج و مرج منتهی شود. اصلِ اساسیِ حکومتِ سلطنتی، قدرت است که ممکن است به ظلم و انقلاب و جنگ منتهی گردد.
