Still nothing, and more palpably nothing, and beyond that nothing, all suspended in a void. God had withdrawn utterly from her, and if she opened her eyes she would be thrown alone into the world to live by her own wits; it was just her, and in a way it was not even her but nothing pitted against nothing. In a panic she opened her eyes, still feeling the absence of God all around her.
