By ordinary standards, McKillip leaves out information you would think you need, and yet you almost never feel actually lost. The details she does give you are unusually load-bearing. The logic is there. It’s just not entirely propositional. She takes “trust the reader” to an extreme. Sometimes she barely gives you the bridge, and somehow you still get across.

That peculiar sense that magic is less a system than a condition of being alive. constructed a complete private existence and then discovers that other people can enter it and disturb its shape. Connection itself is dangerous because it changes the person who has it. McKillip sometimes feels as though human psychology itself has been converted into folklore.
