Dear God,
don’t punish me for saying
my life was so lovely!
We’re human,
our verbs have tenses,
they’re not like Yours,
eternal.

Words – I want them first as things.

Settle down a minute and look, a miracle:
cloud-covered morning,
touch of chill and fog.

Understanding steals me away from words and things
and flings me into the heart of poetry.
That’s why I write poems,
to hide what threatens my fatal weakness.

Love has rhythms which are not those of sadness:
the shape of waves, impulse, running water.

life so hard to understand,
impossible not to love.

Words only hide something deeper, deaf and dumb,
something invented to be silenced.
In moments of grace, rare as they are,
you’ll be able to snatch it out: a live fish
in your bare hand.
Pure terror.
