The man that attacked her-the one she couldn't stop thinking about-was back to finish her off. Beth stared him down as he approached, putting his hands up in a gesture of peace.
"I'm not going to harm you, Bethany. I'm here to help you."

The corner of his mouth curved briefly into a smile.

[She]blasted him with a wallop of her energy before he could finish his lie...

"[...]I know you'll get this gift of yours under control."
Beth gave a humorless laugh. "Is it really such a gift?[...]Maybe I should just forget everything that happened & try to hide what I can do."
"You will do no such thing![...]You remember that professor I dated years ago? He told me once about this quote by Benjamin Franklin. 'Hide not your talents, they for use were made. What's a sundial in the shade?'"

The woman wrapped skeletal fingers around his wrist. "You will make time, Lucius Sempronius Asper."
At once, his heart felt as if it were covered in rime. He clutched his chest and fell to his knees. If his heart was encrusted with frost, his back was surely on fire. Searing pain spread across his shoulders and spine as lash marks reopened...
