This man had a voice that came from somewhere cool and dark, and a little bit filthy. It did things to my skin, like make it prickle. I wanted to hear it for hours, but at the same time, run for the hills.

“Yeah?” Well, this was . . . interesting. I swallowed and tried to get my grin under control. “I like your shirt, so we’re even.”
“My shirt?”
“Yup.”
“That’s it? Just the shirt?”
“Yeah. I guess the guy it belongs to is kinda okay, though. Little bit dramatic sometimes.”
His smile said he didn’t believe me. “Don’t fucking die.”

“There’s something fuckin’ hot about a guy who saves a drowning woman, then makes a cheese sandwich like nothing happened.”

“Go wild. You might like it.”
“Yeah, I uh . . .No, I don’t think going wild is for me.”
“Hey.” He stepped around the table, plucked my beer out of my hand, took a swig from my bottle, then backed up, swaying his hips. “Whoever it was made you boring? That guy? Fuck him.”
“What?” My little laugh came out strained. “No, nobody hurt me. I’m just like this.”

“Saving your fine vampire ass once is unlikely enough,” I sighed. “Twice makes it look like you aren’t even trying.” Weren’t vampires supposed to be all about control and elegance and poise? Why did I have to get involved with the one who was the opposite of all those things?

“Owen. You and I are going to solve Jay’s murder.”

“Uhm, no thank you. I have to be in bed by one a.m.”

“You’re giving me your therapist’s number?”

“Sounds like you need it, buddy.” I finished typing the number into his contacts and held the phone out for him to take back.

He flicked his gaze up and jerked his chin. “Put your number in there.”

“What?”

“Go on. In contacts. Under Pool Boy.”

I half laughed him off. “Why?”

“So I can text you my deepest, darkest secrets at two a.m.”

“Uh, yeah, no. Not doing that.”
