“She gambled us away. And cried about it afterwards. They were the tears of the man-eating crocodile, moaning and crying to attract his victim and then eating the victim, tears still streaming out of his eyes as he chewed and swallowed.”

I went on a wikipedia rabbit hole and Ann Petry’s 1946 debut novel, The Street, became the first novel by an African-American woman to sell more than a million copies. Her family lived in a small Black community in Connecticut (literally braver than us marines). Her father was a pharmacist and mother a shop owner, podiatrist, and hairdresser. Her aunt is Anna Louise James- the 1st female Black pharmacist in CT !!!

“All kinds of trees-big ones-the man with me said they were oak and hemlock, and there’s a cedar forest and there are all kinds of birds. In some places there are so many trees that it is dark-daylight doesn’t reach in. Some of the trees are so big and so old, they made me feel like praying.”

“Tituba thought, That boy simply wanted to go from one place to another. I helped him by feeding him and I would do it again. But the master thinks of him as a thief who stole from his betters and who should be whipped.” published in 1964 🤔😱
