They trudged through the dust of ten million corpses. It rose in billows, filled the air, caked armour that beneath the powdered bone was sometimes Blood Angels red, sometimes Revenant grey. Helm lenses shone through the pall. There was no sun, no night, no day, only a sanguinary gloom.

Raldoron stood back, the better to address both men at once. He spoke a little more firmly, a little more loudly, not caring if he disturbed the melancholy of the tacticarium. 'Eyes forward to the future, brothers,' he said. 'Do not fear the return of the past. Those days are done. We will make Blood Angels of these recruits, I swear.'

The beast had once been this way, an example of humanity born of twisted genes. The Emperor had changed that, mending that which mankind had corrupted, remaking his young body, changing something that could barely be called a man into an exemplar of purity, at least on the outside.
